Sony Reader PRS-700 — Great, But for One Thing …

Sony Reader old_new.jpg Yes, there was a commuter this morning waiting for the 7:17 reading his Kindle.

And that’s all I needed to start thinking about ebooks and ebook readers and how maybe someday all printed material will be digital and there will be no more newspapers or magazines.

Wait! I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.

Do find the whole thing pretty cool so was intrigued by this piece of writing today.  

So all you ever wanted to know about the Sony Reader PRS-700 is here at Mobile Tech Review. A very positive review, but there is something amiss …

What’s the catch? The touch screen layer reduces contrast. Yikes!!!

Digital readers like the Reader and Amazon’s Kindle use e-ink technology, a very low power, paper-like display that’s non-glare and high contrast (much like a book’s pages).

Touch isn’t part of the e-ink technology, nor is backlighting, so we rarely see a reader offering these. Sony, cutting-edge company that they are, found a way to add these two desirable features.

Sony added a touch layer on top of the e-ink display and embedded LED side-lights into the frame that surrounds the display. Clever.

New e-Newspaper Reader Heats Up e-Reader Market

kindle.jpgThe electronic newspaper, a large portable screen that is constantly updated with the latest news, has been a prop in science fiction for ages. It also figures in the dreams of newspaper publishers struggling with rising production and delivery costs, lower circulation and decreased ad revenue from their paper product.

While the dream device remains on the drawing board, Plastic Logic is introducing its version of an electronic newspaper reader — a lightweight plastic screen that mimics the look, but not the feel, of a printed newspaper.

The device, which is unnamed, uses the same technology as the Sony eReader and Amazon’s Kindle (photo above).

Both of those devices are intended primarily as book readers, but Plastic Logic’s device has a screen that is more than twice as large. The size of a piece of copier paper, it can be continually updated via a wireless link and can store and display hundreds of pages of newspapers, books and documents.

The reader will go on sale in the first half of next year. Plastic Logic will not announce which news organization will display its articles on it until the International Consumer Electronics Show in January, when it will also reveal the price.

Amazon To Re-Kindle Its Popular eBook Reader

kindle.jpgAmazon will reportedly ship new versions of its Kindle e-book reader before year’s end. The original reader launched last November sold out in its first week and had Amazon scrambling to fill holiday orders. While sales have been brisk, estimates vary.

A Seattle newspaper confirmed late last week that Amazon.com is in the late stages of rolling out two new versions of Kindle. Reports unconfirmed by Amazon indicate there will be at least two new devices — one with a new user interface, but the same dimensions of the original paperback-sized reader, and another the size of an 8-by-11-inch sheet of paper. Other tantalizing details are that the new readers may sport color choices.

The original Kindle has been criticized for its bland appearance and somewhat clunky controls, so color and a new interface could help sales. Not that Amazon seems to be complaining.

Low estimates of current Kindle sales are pegged at around 230,000 units shipped in nine months, while others speculate that more than 380,00 have been sold.

Kindle Moving & Grooving

kindle.jpgEver since Amazon launched the Kindle last November, TechCrunch has been wondering about just how successful it’s been. (Me, too!)

The electronic book initially sold out and supplies have been tight. The Kindle is such a small part of Amazon’s overall business that the company does not break out how many it’s sold. But we found out anyway: 240,000 Kindles have been shipped since November, according to a source close to Amazon with direct knowledge of the numbers.

Not bad, but could we make the price even more attractive to really rocket sales.
